TEAM SPOTLIGHT: WELCOME RACHEL SORENSEN
We are excited to welcome Rachel Sorensen to Missouri Appleseed as a Program Manager. Through support from an NFL Foundation Grant, she will lead research on criminalized survivors in Missouri jails and prisons to help advance survivor justice legislation in Jefferson City, while also contributing to the Survivor Justice Project.
Rachel received her bachelor’s degree in psychology and English from St. Lawrence University and a certificate in forensic psychology from Washington University in St. Louis. Before joining Missouri Appleseed, Rachel worked with WashU’s Prison Education Project as an AmeriCorps member. At PEP, Rachel supported the university’s incarcerated student population at the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center and the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic, and Correctional Center.
About the Survivor Justice Project
Missouri Appleseed, Alabama Appleseed, and Oklahoma Appleseed are proud to partner with the NFL Foundation. Through a two-year, $450,000 commitment, the NFL Foundation is fully funding a collaborative initiative to advance trauma-informed justice, reunite families, and scale reform across state lines. By meeting each jurisdiction where it stands — implementation, evaluation, or groundwork — the three centers will exchange playbooks instead of reinventing them. Learn more >
PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: MISSOURI FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH

Medicare and Medicaid have roots in Missouri. On July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed these life-saving programs into law in Independence. Sixty years later, they remain vital to our nation’s health care system. Missouri Foundation for Health, a steadfast partner in our Medicaid work, reflects on its history and uncertain future. “Few can see past the speeches and the political battles to the doctor over there that is tending the infirm, and to the hospital that is receiving those in anguish, or feel in their heart painful wrath at the injustice which denies the miracle of healing to the old and to the poor… There is another tradition that we share today. It calls upon us never to be indifferent toward despair. It commands us never to turn away from helplessness. It directs us never to ignore or to spurn those who suffer untended in a land that is bursting with abundance.” — President Lyndon B. Johnson
EDUCATION: MISSOURI MATERNAL HEALTH ACTION NETWORK SUMMIT
Join us at Missouri Maternal Health Action Network’s 3rd Annual Summit, where Missouri Appleseed will be on a panel to discuss the legal aspects of maternal substance use.
Orlando’s Event Center
Maryland Heights, MO
This year’s summit, ‘Bridging the Gaps: Policy, Advocacy, and Prevention for Maternal Mental Health
and Substance Use Disorders,’ will focus on advancing policy change, strengthening advocacy, and promoting prevention strategies that support maternal mental and behavioral health.
ADVOCACY: INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY

Every August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day brings a global community together to take action on overdose. Criminalizing substance use means people who need treatment instead end up in jail. Missouri Appleseed is proud to work with advocates across our state to expand education, awareness, and access to mental health services and training so that jails are better equipped to connect those in custody with necessary healthcare services.
Join Missouri Appleseed, along with sheriffs, jail administrators, state officials, and healthcare providers at our upcoming Medicaid and Incarceration convening on September 18th.
