BILL SIGNED
Voting Rights Restored for 41,000 Missourians in Time for August Primary
On July 13, Governor Kehoe signed HB 1871, which includes provisions to restore the right to vote for the majority of individuals who have completed their sentences of incarceration but are still on parole or probation. Restoring the right to vote for people on parole or probation fosters community engagement and encourages participation in the democratic process.
Studies show that individuals in states that permit voting restoration post-incarceration are less likely to reoffend compared to individuals in states with continued restrictions. Learn more >
Thank you to Representative Melanie Stinnett (R-Springfield) for her sponsorship and dedication to this bill, and to Senator Kurtis Gregory (District 21) for adding it as an amendment to HB 1871.

ADVOCACY: INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY
Every August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day brings people together to remember those lost to overdose, raise awareness, and advocate for better access to treatment and recovery. Missouri Appleseed is proud to work with advocates across our state to expand education, awareness, and access to mental health services and training so that jails are better equipped to connect those in custody with necessary healthcare services.

Advancing Awareness through Education: Explore our CLE
As part of that work, we’re highlighting our free CLE resource, Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) & Family Unification: Bridging Justice and Recovery. The training explores the legal landscape surrounding substance use disorders during pregnancy and parenting, the role of MAT in strengthening family bonds and promoting child wellbeing, and legal strategies for protecting the rights of parents in recovery.
