GRANT NEWS: NFL FOUNDATION
Missouri Appleseed, Alabama Appleseed, and Oklahoma Appleseed are proud to partner with the NFL Foundation. Through a two-year, $450,000 commitment, the NFL Foundation is fully funding a collaborative initiative to advance trauma-informed justice, reunite families, and scale reform across state lines. By meeting each jurisdiction where it stands — implementation, evaluation, or groundwork — the three centers will exchange playbooks instead of reinventing them.
We are so grateful to the Appleseed Network for facilitating this collaboration grant, and we can’t wait to welcome survivors home as a result of their support.

CURRENT PROJECT: ENROLLING MISSOURI JAIL POPULATIONS IN MEDICAID
Missouri Appleseed empowers inmates with Medicaid enrollment
Missouri Appleseed’s Mary Quandt was featured on FOX 2, highlighting their Medicaid in Missouri Jails Initiative. “We partnered with 20 county jails across the state and we’re constantly expanding,” she shared. The program aims to set incarcerated individuals up for success after incarceration by enrolling them in Medicaid before their release. More on this project >
Mary also appeared with Dr. Oldeg as special guests for a segment of STL TV’s “The Issues” to discuss the importance of Medicaid access in support of reentry.

ADVOCACY: IN THE NEWS
In a new commentary for the Missouri Independent, medical student Nisaa Aleem worked with Missouri Appleseed to author a piece about how her experiences in medicine have shown her the importance of Medicaid for Missouri.
“Medicaid does more than support individuals; it is a vital public health tool that strengthens entire communities. Now, with federal Medicaid funding facing potential cuts, Missouri stands at a crossroads.” — Nisaa Aleem

Liza Weiss returned to her alma mater, John Burroughs School, on April 28th to speak about her work as the Founding Executive Director of Missouri Appleseed. She inspired students with stories of effective advocacy for incarcerated women and their families. Liza highlighted Missouri Appleseed’s legislative successes, including improved healthcare access and policy reforms that keep families together.
2025 MISSOURI GENERAL ASSEMBLY: LEGISLATIVE NEWS
Missouri ends the regressive sales tax on feminine hygiene products and diapers
House Bills 594 and 508 were truly agreed to and finally passed on May 7, 2025, authorizing a state sales tax exemption for feminine hygiene products, diapers, and incontinence items. For far too long, Missouri taxed these essential items at 4.225%. This makes Missouri one of 32 states, plus D.C., that have removed the tampon tax.
Missouri Appleseed is proud to have partnered with PERIOD. and St. Louis Area Diaper Bank to achieve this significant win for women’s health. Learn more >
Through research and policy reform, Missouri Appleseed advances initiatives designed to have a lasting, systemic impact on justice-involved Missourians, their families, and the greater community.
