Just like if Gulliver did a road trip across Missouri.
Welcome to my travel guide to Southern Missouri. On this trip, I visited Douglas, Howell, Greene, Texas, and Wright County.
DAY ONE

First, I stopped in Willow Springs for a coffee. A town that sounds like a neighboring city to Stars Hollow in Gilmore Girls. The Coffee Deck is owned by a local who brews coffee inside his wife’s beauty salon. He is currently expanding his shop and plans to roast his beans in-house.
Then, I headed to the Howell County Sheriff’s Department for a visit with the jail administrator about our Medicaid in Jails project. From Howell, I traveled across the county line to Texas County.

Houston in Texas County offers a main street for shopping and dining. I personally liked the mural for the Lone Star City.

As avid history nerd, I am always on the hunt for Baptist churches with a story. Here in Texas County, Union Baptist church, is the oldest church in the area.
DAY TWO
I took a drive to Springfield to meet with Greene County’s CBHL and Rep. Melanie Stinnett. Anytime I am traveling, I like to stop at McAlister’s for Sweet Tea. A tradition that began with my Mema and continues to this day with me.
Springfield offers a fabulous local library for anyone to sit and do work.
I ended my evening with dinner at Club 60. A steakhouse that offers sirloin at a reasonable place. Plus, their house salad is something to remember!
DAY THREE
For the final day of my trip, I drove to Ava, Missouri. What a beautiful drive. I stopped by one of Ava’s coffee shops, Melancholy Roasting. The atmosphere is all natural light and plants. I drank their Banana Foster iced latte.

I ate at the Edgy Hippie in Ava. They make their own special sauce, and everything is made to order.
Southern Missouri offers a variety of local restaurants, coffee shops, and history for all. The jails there are also committed to providing Medicaid for incarcerated people pre-release to create safer communities and increase individuals’ access to healthcare.
