Modeled after the nine other U.S. states that have established prison nurseries, bipartisan legislation spearheaded by St. Louis-based nonprofit Missouri Appleseed propelled the project forward. Missouri Appleseed executive director Liza Weiss says the results of such programs speak for themselves.
“Individuals who I’ve worked with who have given birth in prison have talked about the longterm damage that occurs when they’ve been separated right after birth from their children,” Weiss says. “They talk about how long it takes to repair the relationships with children. This will also allow the infants to develop secure attachments with their mothers; evidence shows that having those secure attachments leads to important cognitive and behavioral development.”
