IMPACT: ESTABLISHING A MISSOURI PRISON NURSERY
Missouri’s first prison nursery officially opened on January 30th at the Women’s Eastern Correctional Center in Vandalia. Missouri became the 10th state to offer a prison nursery program after bipartisan legislation was signed in 2022.
“Their lives are going to be changed, their moms’ lives are going to be changed, their communities when they go home are going to be changed because they were here.”
– Kim Perkins, Nursery Program Director
The program allows eligible mothers with 18 months or less remaining on their sentences to care for their newborns, fostering bonding and enabling them to leave prison together. The facility is housed in a previously empty wing that was renovated with seven new large rooms. Each room can hold two moms and two babies with their own beds and cribs. This creates enough space for up to 14 mother-child pairs to participate at a time. The program will also provide resources like life skills training, trauma therapy, and parenting classes. Eligibility is limited to those with non-violent offenses and no history of crimes against children or sexual offenses.
Tune in to Show Me St. Louis on KSDK this Wednesday, February 5, at 10:00 AM to hear Executive Director Liza Weiss share how Missouri’s new prison nursery went from vision to reality.
