CURRENT PROJECT: REPEAL MISSOURI’S INCARCERATION REIMBURSEMENT ACT
Repeal Missouri’s Incarceration Reimbursement Act unfairly and unjustly seizes money from incarcerated individuals outside of the individual’s court-ordered sentence. The current law decreases individuals’ chances of successfully reentering society and generates little benefit to the state.
House Bill 723 was heard on February 17th in the House Committee on Corrections and Public Institutions. This bill, filed by Rep. Tara Peters (R-Rolla), would repeal MIRA. Powerful witnesses testified, including Missouri Attorney Bevis Schock, Missouri Appleseed lobbyist Jeff Smith, and David Jackson. On February 25th, the House Committee on Corrections and Public Institutions unanimously voted HB 723 out of committee!
Missouri Appleseed began working on this bill in July 2024. We’re grateful to work alongside Rep. Peters. Thank you for filing this important bill and partnering with us!
IMPACT: ESTABLISHING A PRISON NURSERY IN MISSOURI
Missouri’s first prison nursery officially opened on January 30th at the Women’s Eastern Correctional Center in Vandalia after bipartisan legislation was signed into law in 2022. The program allows interested and eligible mothers with 18 months or less remaining on their sentences to live with and care for their newborns before returning home together.
