GROW LITERACY BUILD CHANGE
Let’s invest in building stronger communities.
Missouri Appleseed and the St. Louis County Jail are partnering to launch a pilot literacy program for jail residents aiming to create pathways for employment and reduce recidivism. From GED prep and job readiness to family-focused literacy, the pilot literacy program will provide vital support to help individuals succeed when they return to their communities.
This Give STL Day our goal is to raise $10,000 to bring literacy education to St. Louis County Jail residents. With your support we can help individuals returning home build stronger families and communities.
Early Giving is underway! Invest in building change in St. Louis by supporting Missouri Appleseed. Donate today >
CURRENT PROJECT: ENROLLING MISSOURI JAIL POPULATIONS IN MEDICAID
Inside the Effort to Bridge Reentry and Healthcare Access
In a recent First Alert 4 story by reporter Alexis Zotos, Missouri Appleseed’s Mary Quandt and St. Louis County Department of Public Health’s Ernest McDonnell share how the Medicaid in Jails Initiative is being implemented across Missouri to connect individuals to Medicaid before release. This transformative work aims to reduce recidivism, make communities safer, and help individuals succeed when they return home.
“Medicaid means you can keep your prescriptions. You can stay healthy. If you started Medication Assistance Treatment for substance disorder, you can continue that treatment. If you’re trying to get a job in construction and you need a physical, Medicaid will pay for that.”
— Mary Quandt, Missouri Appleseed
20 county jails across Missouri are now implementing Medicaid enrollment during incarceration (as of April 2025)
